Today is my first day at North Star International School. It isn’t necessarily my first day here; Florence and I have been here a few times in a week to get more information about the school and its curriculum. The last time we came by, we were given a tour of the school. At North Star, there are children of different races and backgrounds. I wonder why an Obroni would send their children to Ghana for education. When every Ghanaian, both young and old, wishes to relocate abroad for greener pastures. Hmmm, as Nana would always say, the ways of man are mysterious. Only God knows what obroni sees and knows that we do not. “This shall be your dorm, Ohemaa. The Sapphire dorm. This will be your new home away from home. You will meet many people, form special bonds, and hopefully make lifelong friends here.” Mr. Nyameson said to me, disrupting my thoughts. I nodded in agreement. A bright smile on my face and trembling in my heart. The children here were different. I knew I was not going to fit in. However, I didn’t want to share my thoughts and fears with Florence because over the past few weeks I have been with her, she has had a motivational speech for every fear or worry of mine. It was a nice thing to have, but this time I wasn’t mentally ready to hear a speech; what I wanted was to walk out those gates and never return.
