“And you aren’t?” she asked rhetorically. I laughed even louder. Now that I think of it, I am certain it was out of discomfort and not amusement that I laughed. “Not really, I am a charity case, sort of,” I responded with a shrug. I proceeded to explain to her how I moved from Asempa to the city and the sudden change in my life and routine. I also shared with her my confusion and how much I miss my grandma and friends back home. “But I am told it is for the best, and so I am hoping it turns out for the best”. “You know, Adelaide, unlike you, I see this place as an upgrade, and I’m open to learn and seeing what it holds for me. You, on the other hand, may see it as a downgrade, but you can also hold out hope to learn and see what it can teach you, too. Florence says this place will make me a woman of substance and great importance to society, she says it made her too and the Florence I have come to know is one worth emulating, maybe we should have an open mind so we can see the opportunities this place has to offer, we can even help each other face our fears and find the silver lining in whatever this place throws at us.” She stared at me as though feeling sad for me and said, “Look at you spewing wisdom, girl.” We broke out in laughter at her cinematic gestures and struggled to catch our breath after; letting out sighs, we sat in silence for a few minutes before making our way back to the Sapphire dorm.
We were greeted with a calmer common room, which had just two girls, curled up on sofas, and we made our way to our room.
We found a fully furnished room with well-made beds, but our roommates were nowhere in sight. Adelaid suggested we check the common room to confirm if they were the ones we passed by earlier, and it turned out to be true. Apparently, they were worried sick and had looked all over our dorm for us, but to no avail. Adelaide made a joke about them not looking hard enough as we made our way back to our room. If looks could kill, AJs would have had Adelaide lying lifeless on the ground at her funny remark. Turns out AJ didn’t find Adelaide’s comment funny.
